Tidal water exchange drives fish and crustacean abundances in salt marshes

چکیده

Coastal salt marshes provide important habitat for fishes and crustaceans, including species of commercial value that feed or take refuge in the marsh. Yet population abundances vary considerably between sites, often without clear explanation. We hypothesised faunal abundance mean size would be positively related to 2 physical properties govern marsh accessibility water-dependent species, as has been found on southeastern coast USA: (1) volume water exchanged by tidal flooding, which gives access marsh, (2) edge amount, length water-vegetation borderline per unit area where can feed. Digital terrain models information were used select 5 Wales, UK, differed amount exchange (52°N, 4°W). Fishes crustaceans sampled using baited traps, fyke nets seine nets. In total, 15 caught, commercially valuable brown shrimp, European eel sea bass. volume, but not boosted fish crustacean abundances. Crab bass sizes both negatively affected exchange, while shrimp unaffected. Our findings show how mechanisms drive geographical regions. Feasibly, fisheries associations with hydrogeomorphology might operate differently well.

Tidal Flushing Restores the Physiological Condition of Fish Residing in Degraded Salt Marshes

Roads, bridges, and dikes constructed across salt marshes can restrict tidal flow, degrade habitat quality for nekton, and facilitate invasion by non-native plants including Phragmites australis. Introduced P. australis contributes to marsh accretion and eliminates marsh surface pools thereby adversely affecting fish by reducing access to intertidal habitats essential for feeding, reproduction,...

Does the invasive plant Elymus athericus modify fish diet in tidal salt marshes?

The invasion of Mont-Saint-Michel Bay salt marshes (France) by a grass species (Elymus athericus) has led to important changes in vegetation cover, which is likely to modify the habitat for many invertebrates. Some of them constitute the main food items for several fish species, such as young sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus), that feed in salt marsh creeks ...

Critical bifurcation of shallow microtidal landforms in tidal flats and salt marshes.

Shallow tidal basins are characterized by extensive tidal flats and salt marshes that lie within specific ranges of elevation, whereas intermediate elevations are less frequent in intertidal landscapes. Here we show that this bimodal distribution of elevations stems from the characteristics of wave-induced sediment resuspension and, in particular, from the reduction of maximum wave height cause...
